A serious ragging case has been reported from a private college on the outskirts of Bengaluru.

Police in Devanahalli say they have registered a criminal case against 23 senior students of the Akash Group of Institutions after complaints of sustained harassment and physical assault on first-year students. Three of the accused have been arrested so far.

The incident took place at the campus in Devanahalli town, located in Bengaluru Rural district.

According to the police, junior students were allegedly forced to bring alcohol and cigarettes for seniors. They were also made to stand for long hours holding their books as a form of punishment.

Devanahalli Police said, “A serious ragging incident has come to light at the Akash Group of Institutions in Devanahalli town, Bengaluru Rural district.”

College official attacked during inquiry, police say

The situation escalated when the college administration intervened.

Police said the college’s administrative head, Midun Madhavan, went to inquire about the complaints raised by first-year students. During the visit, he was allegedly attacked by a group of senior students.

The FIR further states that some juniors were assaulted with iron rods, stones and wooden sticks. A gold chain belonging to one of the students was also allegedly snatched during the incident.

Devanahalli Police said, “An FIR has been registered against 23 senior students for allegedly harassing first-year students, and three key accused have been arrested by the police.”

Search on for remaining accused

A case has been registered at the Devanahalli Police Station under relevant sections.

Three students – Bilal, Zhiril and Mishal – have been taken into custody. Police said efforts are underway to trace the remaining 20 accused students.

Devanahalli Police added that the investigation is ongoing and further action will follow based on evidence and witness statements.
